Helpful Tips
Flag minibus taxis by route numbers like 'City Centre, Area 25'. Wave to hail. Hand cash to the conductor. Simple.
Install Ulendo Taxi before landing. The app works for cash or mobile-money rides. Reliable. No surprises.
Lilongwe Market hides the main minibus rank behind its stalls. Routes fan out to every residential zone. Ask for 'Old Town' if you feel lost.
Heading to Kamuzu International Airport? Book Ulendo early or bargain with a private taxi. Shared minibuses skip the terminal. Plan ahead.
Common Scams to Avoid
Taxi drivers at the official rank sometimes quote inflated 'fixed' fares to town by claiming the meter is broken or that night rates apply all day. Ask to see the meter running or walk 50 m beyond the rank where drivers usually switch to the standard metered rate.
Unofficial porters in the arrivals hall grab bags from the carousel and insist on carrying them to transport for a high fee. Politely but firmly decline any unrequested help and keep your trolley close. Official porters wear bright yellow bibs and charge a modest fixed amount posted on a sign near the exit.
Currency-exchange booths just outside customs advertise 'no commission' yet use a deliberately poor rate without clearly displaying the mid-market figure. Compare the offered rate with the real-time rate on your phone. Wait to use an ATM inside the terminal, which typically gives the fair bank rate.
